Have a budget for this project
Make a budget before committing to a family photo session. This will determine if you should get new clothes and shoes for everyone in your family, or shop your closet to see what you can work with. Also, it helps with figuring out if you want to hire a professional. My preference for family portraits is to use a professional photographer, but if the cost is too high and you’re comfortable with using your phone or have a friend that can take the pictures for you, then go for it.
Choose your outfit colors
Now that you know how much you’re willing to spend, it’s time to decide on the colors you’ll love to use. Matching the right colors when it comes to outfits for fall family photos is key. If you’re wondering what colors you should wear for fall pictures, I would say go for neutral tones. The colors should all complement one another. I love using three colors when I coordinate my family’s outfits. Two colors can work for 2-3 people, but more than that, using only two colors will become matchy-matchy. Using five colors or above is too many colors to work with.
Try on your clothes before the day of the photoshoot
Try on your outfit beforehand. You do not want to wait until the last minute, as it can get chaotic. It’s easy to forget things like buttons, zippers, accessories, etc. when you’re rushing to get ready. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked at an outfit thinking it’s the perfect size for it to disappoint me. You would want to make sure everyone’s outfits are the right size and that they are comfortable.
Dress for the Weather
Dress appropriately for the weather. In cooler temperatures, layering is key. Bring a sweater or jacket with you to layer under your clothes. And if you’re going to be outside for an extended period of time, consider bringing a hat, gloves, and sunscreen.
Accessories
They seem small, but they make a lot of difference by adding spice to an outfit. Add some fun accessories, like a fedora hat, a belt, and a necklace.

Find a Photographer Who Can Capture You and Your Kids.
For easier coordination of family outfits, take the clothes you bought online to the store with you to get any remaining outfits or accessories. I know this is an extra step, but it helps with matching the right colors. Stores like H&M, Target, and Old Navy are great places to find outfits for everyone in the family. You can find a list of the best places to shop for kids here.
If you’re looking for a photographer to capture your family’s memories, here are some things to keep in mind. First, make sure he or she has experience taking pictures of families. Second, ask him or her questions about his or her style and approach. Third, find out whether he or she offers packages and what is included in them. Finally, check references and reviews online.
Bring along a small mirror so you can check if your hair is looking right or if you need to freshen up your makeup.
Bring snacks that will not stain your clothes. I always pack crackers and water for my kids.
