This is your ultimate guide to color-blocking trends for this year and beyond
Color blocking fashion has been widely seen in the previous fashion show season and current shows, making bold statements and encouraging people to get out of their comfort zones and wear innovative and colorful pieces.
As spring approaches, I’m beginning to see so many colorful pieces on my timeline, and that makes me so happy. A couple years ago, I’d find myself looking for brown, neutral-toned outfits for fall and winter. Those are not my go-to colors, but I was getting them because those colors have been the standard for cooler seasons.
Wearing anything beautiful that makes you confident will make you look rich and elegant.
It doesn’t matter if the weather is cooling down or is getting hotter where you are, you can wear colors in any and every season. I have seen so many videos and posts on how wearing neutrals makes you look rich and elegant. I am debunking that myth. Wearing anything beautiful that makes you confident will make you look rich and elegant.

What does color-blocking mean in fashion?
Color blocking fashion is the term used to define a specific fashion style that combines two or three bold and often contrary shades of the color palette, creating an innovative statement outfit. You can wear more than three different colors if you’d like, because there are no limits when it comes to color-blocking clothes. The trend was popularized by Stephen Burrows, a Black fashion designer born in New Jersey and first introduced in the 1940s.
Different ways of color blocking clothes
There are three different types of color blocking trends you should keep an eye out for. They provide excellent looks and variety for those who want to try something new while staying stylish.
Contrasting colors
This is the most common color blocking style. It involves contrasting colors, which are generally the opposite colors on the color wheel. For example, combining a shade of green with pink, blue, lime, etc. You can use two or more different colors. I prefer to use no more than three colors.
Monochromatic Look
You can mix different tones, textures, or shades of the same color to create a unique look. A monochromatic look allows one color to be the main character. In a traditional monochromatic outfit, you might be thinking about gray, black, or warm tones, which you can, of course, wear, but the essence of color blocking is to step out of your comfort zone and wear bold and out-of-the-ordinary colors such as emerald green, bubblegum pink, lemon yellow, and so on.
Neutrals
A color-blocking style that evolves around neutrals. All neutrals look great together; combine two or three vibrant shades to create a subtle color block look. They are basically your whites, browns, grays, etc.
How to start your own color-blocking fashion trend:
- Use colorful accessories.
- Wear a multi-colored outfit.
- Mix bold colors with neutrals.
- Add color to your makeup if you’re wearing an all neutral outfit, or vice versa.

Spring & Summer Color Blocking fashion trends
If you haven’t done so yet, spring and summer are the two best seasons for trying color-blocking clothes for the first time. The warm temperatures scream for bold and eye-catching colors.
Spring is great for adding a pop of color to your day as well as saying goodbye to the cold weather. But since the first month or so, it might still be a bit chilly, you can play around with neutrals for coats (since the majority of manufacturers make them in darker colors) and spice up your outfit with a colorful shirt or statement pants.
For summer, it is all about choosing the appropriate fabrics instead of the clothing pieces. This means that if you’re not comfortable wearing skirts, try looking for colorful pants, shorts, and any other piece that is made with lighter fabrics such as linen that provide great comfort, are stylish, and allow your body to breathe on hot summer days. The same applies to blouses and shirts. Combining fabrics is also something to look out for because the trend is hot for the next season.
Color Blocking Outfits For Autumn & Winter
When the colder days come, you might be tempted to choose the monochromatic or neutral color blocking trends, which is totally okay. The rainy and icy weather makes us want to dress in darker tones, but if you want to make your day better and improve your mood, dressing in brighter colors can definitely help.
Autumn and winter are ruled by two types of color palettes that contain, respectively, blues and reds, in which, depending on the season, you can use this to your advantage and throw in a unique color-blocking piece. Electric blue, greenish light blue, and other tones are excellent for a winter color-blocking outfit.
While red, bright orange, and similar colors are popular choices for a bold autumn color blocking look, I strongly encourage you to go for it.
