When I started my blog, I wish I had done more detailed research on tech equipment for bloggers. I was more focused on the writing aspect, not knowing that a good blog post takes more than just writing. What tools do you need to blog? If you are looking to start a blog or have already started, go ahead and bookmark this post because I will be sharing the tech equipment I use for my blog.
Tech equipment for bloggers
Before going deep into the blogging equipment list I use, keep in mind that you do not have to have all the tech equipment on this list to start your blogging journey. The things that are at the top of the list for you to start running a successful blog are a smartphone and a computer. The other things you can add later as you see fit. The best equipment for bloggers can be different for everyone. That is why this list is focused on the key items.
What do I need for blogging?
You’ll need a smartphone or device like an iPad for a variety of tasks, which include taking photos, sharing your blog posts on social media, researching, editing photos, blog graphics, and so on. A desktop or laptop (my preference is laptop).
Computer – Macbook Pro
For the first three months of blogging, I was using my desktop to do everything, and that was not ideal because I had to be home, sitting at a particular spot to get work done. Getting my Macbook is a big blessing, and it has helped me to be more efficient. Any good brand of computer is fine. I just love this because of how fast it works.
Iphone – 12 Pro Max
It’s the most convenient tool I have for blogging. The best travel blogging equipment to have. I use it for taking pictures, videos, editing, and more. The notes app on my iPhone is used at least once a day. Even though I love writing notes on physical paper, I can’t always have my notebook with me, so the note app works perfectly. Instead of buying a camera remote, I connect my phone to the Canon app to use it as a remote, and for quick photos, using my phone camera comes in handy.
Camera – Canon T7i
This is one of the best investments that I have made to date. I love using my Canon T7i Rebel because the quality of the pictures and videos is unmatched. But the key to having a quality image is to make time to learn how to operate your camera in different settings. Not knowing how to use your camera is frustrating. The CanonT7i is a great beginner-friendly piece for a reasonable price. If you have the budget and want to spend, I’ll say go for the mirrorless version. The Canon M60 Mark II has some great reviews on Amazon and YouTube.
Youtube is a great place to learn about any camera and its settings. So do your research, practice more, and figure out what settings work best for you.
Bluetooth Remote
If you are going to be self-shooting on your phone or camera, you do not want to be running to and from your camera/phone every 3–10 seconds to get a picture, because you will be spending so much more time than you should and you might not even get the picture that you are looking for. I am able to connect my phone to work as a remote for my DSLR and have my tiny bluetooth remote for shooting on my phone. This are one of the bloggers tools or tech equipments that is underrated .
Tripod
Of course, if you’re shooting yourself, you can’t use the camera without the tripod, especially if shooting is mostly done outdoors. I am currently using the Torjim tripod, a sturdy and affordable brand.
Lens
A lens is a big deal for getting good quality images. I have three lenses; the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4, my main lens for major photoshoots; the Sigma 18-250mm f3.5, which is very versatile; and the Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8. If you are new to the photography world, three lenses can sound like a lot, but trust me, I used them all for different purposes. The Sigma 18-250mm f3.5 is also a great lens for beginners.
Lights
As you learn more about photography, you will come to understand the importance of this tech equipment. When searching for affordable lights, the list was exhausting, but I’m glad I got the Neewer Ring Light. It works great. I also got a soft box and I love it more than my ring light, but they both work great together.
SD Cards
I learnt the hard way to always have an extra SD card with me. After a 45-minute drive to my shooting location, I set the camera, only to discover that my SD card is full and it is locked. I wasted so much time trying to fix it, and guess what? Yep, I couldn’t fix it.
Hard Drive
Your phone and computer will thank you for getting a hard drive. As a blogger, you often get images for your blog site or social media to promote your blog. Your phone and computer space will go fast, which can also affect the speed of your computer.
Some apps for graphics
Now let’s talk about the other tools for bloggers. Having great content does not stop at just putting out the blog post; you also have to promote it. When I started blogging, I didn’t realize how important images were for promoting the blog. I’m glad I was able to figure out how to get graphics for my blog.
Editing apps for photos
- Lightroom: I use Lightroom for all of my pictures. It’s great for lighting and color correcting, which help you to have a consistent aesthetic on your blog.
- Lensa: I love Lensa because of the blurred background that it gives. I use it mostly for my phone pictures.
- Facetune: I only use Facetune for final touches. If I have something I want to remove from my pictures, the patch tool works perfectly. I also use it to smooth out blemishes or anything in my pictures that I don’t like.
Canva
Canva is a tool that will give you so many templates for your blog graphics. I use it for videos and images. It’s technology equipment that is key for blog graphics.
I’m also getting more consistent with shooting vlogs for YouTube and posting on Pinterest, where I cross-promote my blog. Below is the tech equipment I use to edit my vlogs and videos.
Editing apps for videos
Inshot
A great app that is also user-friendly for creating videos. As with most apps, the quality of your video will be reduced after editing, but it’s not so bad that you can’t use it. There have also been so many updates to the InShot app that are making editing easier and better.
Mojo
Mojo is another vlogging equipment kit I use to edit videos for my Instagram stories and Pinterest. I paid for the pro version, which is less than $50 for the year, and I would say the investment is worth it because I am always on that app. I create stories and videos to share with my audience when I have a new blog post up. They do have a free version, but from experience you won’t have unique templates.
If you’re looking to vlog more, Best Cameras is a great resource to check out.
Blogging is time-consuming, and there are a lot of things that go into it. From my experience, I would say you can’t figure everything out before you start. Research the main things and learn more about the other stuff as you go. Do not hold back because you do not have all the equipment. You can get any of these items later. As cliche as this sounds, start with what you have. That said, I’ll leave with a famous wise word that most blogger professors use. “You can always edit a bad post, but not an empty one.” I have linked all of my equipment here.
Happy Blogging!
